Research Study Participation- Eating Disorders: The Role of Pride and Shame in Help-Seeking and Motivation to Change
Courtney is a trainee clinical psychologist studying at the University of Liverpool and work in the NHS, who is conducting a study looking at the role of shame and pride in help-seeking and motivation to change in eating disorders/eating disorder symptoms. Courtney is hoping that, by speaking to people about their experiences and views, she can pull together themes to help better understand this. Courtney is hoping the findings will not only help overall understanding, but will also help services improve, possibly by improving early access and intervention so people can get help and support sooner. The study has been given NHS ethical approval.
Who Courtney is hoping to talk to:
- Those who were assigned female at birth,
- aged 18-25 years old,
- live in the UK,
- can speak and understand English and
- are currently experiencing any Eating Disorder Symptoms (diagnosis is not needed)
Expected commitment from participants:
If participants are interested, they will need to read the participant information sheet to ensure they understand the study and proceed to a screening questionnaire via a link at the end of this to look at eligibility. This will take approximately 10 minutes and if eligible, participants will need to complete the consent form and then arrange an interview. Consent can be given after the screening questionnaire, where participants will have to open a new link and then finish the screening questionnaire to save their response. Or, participants can submit their contact details for Courtney to send the link to do in their own time.
Before the interview, participants will be asked to complete a short anonymous demographic questionnaire (2-5 minutes). The interview will be online via Teams with the lead researcher (Courtney) unless otherwise agreed, and will last 45-60 minutes.
Closing date: ongoing
If you have any questions or require further clarification, please contact Courtney Williams at Courtney.williams@liverpool.ac.uk
Courtney, the researcher, is happy to discuss any needs and barriers to support participation. Both questionnaires can be completed in the participant’s own time and the interview will be arranged for a time best suited to them. There is also the option for face-to-face and travel reimbursement but this will need to be discussed and agreed with Courtney.
If you would like support with completing the questionnaires or are unsure if these have been submitted properly, please email Courtney.
