The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency for Social Workers in England have been active since social workers joined the HCPC in August 2012. In 2015, the HCPC began a review of the Standards, to ensure that they were fit for purpose and that they reflected the changing context of delivering social care in England – in particular, that they took into account new financial constraints facing social workers and the recent passing into legislation of the Care Act 2014. Shaping Our Lives was asked to undertake their own review of the standards. Shaping Our Lives recruited a group of service users and carers to reflect on the standards from their experience of interacting with social workers when in receipt of services; they also discussed the standards with a group of social work students and service user educators at London South Bank University and New College Durham. This report collects the feedback from and experiences of both groups, presents their points against each standard and makes recommendations to the HCPC on the basis of this consultation.
