Following a small-scale research project from 1996-98 and the establishment of the Shaping Our Lives National User Group, Shaping Our Lives started a number of development projects with the aim of putting into practice their findings on user involvement and how service users thought about evaluating services in terms of their outcomes. Working with the Black User Group (London Boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham and Ealing), Ethnic Disabled Group Emerged (EDGE) (Manchester), Footprints and Waltham Forest Black Mental Health Service User Group (North London), and Service Users’ Action Forum (Wakefield), Shaping Our Lives arranged for four projects to be run around outcomes and user experiences of how services are delivered. This report brings together the reports from each of those four development projects, as well as also an examination of the process of the projects, looking at the lessons that others can take away when working in this field.
