In November 2018, Health Campaigns Together – an initiative to enable health campaigns to liaise together, share experiences and lessons, and work together on issues of common concern – held the Reclaim Social Care Conference in Birmingham. Shaping Our Lives Chair Peter Beresford presented at the conference; his presentation, “From a system of social care in crisis, to a support for independent living and a creative economy,” discussed the myriad failings of the UK’s social care system and the weakness of its safety net. Looking toward the future – a future where “the numbers of disabled and older people are greatly rising” – Peter calls for a “different approach to support.” Ultimately, Peter makes the case for “a policy of person-centred support, based on social models of disability and distress that challenge the barriers and discrimination social care service users face … [and] put in that help that people need to live on equal terms to others in the mainstream.”
