Exploring Transgender and Gender Diverse People’s Experiences of Fertility Treatment for Conception in the UK

About the research

A Clinical Psychology Doctorate student at the University of East London is exploring the positive and negative experiences of transgender and gender diverse people who have used fertility treatment to conceive in the UK.

The research aims to understand participants’ experiences of growing their families through fertility treatment and the impact on their psychological wellbeing.

Who can take part?

The researcher is looking for people who:

  • Are based in the UK.
  • Identify as transgender or gender diverse, including but not limited to non-binary, genderfluid and agender people. The study takes a self-identifying approach.
  • Have started or undergone fertility treatment with a view to conceiving.

This includes fertility treatment through a clinic or do-it-yourself (DIY) methods, such as at-home insemination.

Participants may be the person undergoing treatment or their partner or co-parent.

People at the beginning of their fertility journey are also welcome. Having an initial clinic consultation or starting at-home treatment counts as beginning treatment.

What’s involved?

Participants will be invited to take part in one interview lasting approximately one hour.

Interviews can take place through Microsoft Teams or by telephone, at a time convenient for the participant. In-person interviews can also be discussed.

Accessibility and inclusion

Participants will be asked about their access requirements before the interview. Accessible documents are available on request, and interview questions can be provided in advance.

Participants will also be asked about their preferred pronouns and language relating to gender, parenting and fertility. Gender-neutral language will otherwise be used.

The study has been designed in consultation with transgender people.

Closing date

5 December 2026.
