The Parent Perspective: What is the experience of receiving a diagnosis of developmental language disorder (DLD)?
This project is being led by Dr Hannah Harvey at Birmingham City University and supported by a team of parents of children with developmental language disorder (DLD). They are trying to understand how it feels to be told that your child has DLD and what is important to parents in the way that the diagnosis is given. They will first be interviewing parents about how it felt to receive the diagnosis, and then parents will be invited to a workshop where they will work together to decide what is most important to them. The project’s overall aim is to produce a resource, designed by parents, to make sure that diagnosis is a supportive experience for future parents.
They are looking for:
They are looking for any parent whose child received a diagnosis of DLD from a speech and language therapist. It is important that they hear about a diverse range of experiences, so they’d be really interested if you feel professionals have ever used alternative terms, or made the diagnosis in an informal way, before DLD was mentioned.
Expected commitment from participants:
The activity will be a one-to-one interview lasting between 60 and 90 minutes. The using digital Microsoft Teams (Hannah can provide support if you have never used Teams before). Interviews will be recorded with your permission. You will also be invited to take part in a workshop, with other parents in this study, to talk about the findings of the study. If you agree, they will play an extract of your interview, but this is your choice.
Commitment to inclusion:
They can adapt the way they do things to meet your needs, please let them know when you contact them. For example, they can do the interviews over email, and send documents in an accessible format. As the workshop will take place in English, they ask that you are able to speak English to participate.
Closing date to apply: They will be finishing recruitment for this study in April 2024.
